Life Skills

This course covers a range of learning activities that will focus on assisting individuals with an intellectual disability via a range of practical and social skills. There will be an underlying theme of health and wellbeing, delivered via activities that focus on building literacy and numeracy skills in everyday life.

  • Keeping up to date with current issues and trends

  • Exercise and nutrition

  • Job tasks
  • Speaking up and building confidence

Literacy & Numeracy

The course focuses on building basic literacy and numeracy skills through activities contextualised to planning for travel and travelling on public transport.

Learners will be able to develop employability or life skills to improve their study or employment opportunities, participate in their community and become more independent.

Topics include:

  • Using internet to find travel information
  • Language of direction
  • Excursion to local library and cafe
  • Road Safety Awareness
  • Health/Exercise & Gardening

Pathway to Further Education & Employment

Employable Me helps learners to identify their strengths, interests, skills, life stage limitations and life stage opportunities. It assists them to explore possible pathways to employment or further study. The sessions include: identifying personal strengths and transferrable skills and relating them to career pathways; an introduction to studying at TAFE; initial preparation for job interviews; understanding the benefits of volunteering in building networks; and developing a personal Action Plan.

In the course, learners develop a better understanding of themselves; what they have to offer as an employee; and the areas of employment in which they would like to work. This course is designed to lead on to the pre-accredited Moving On course, but may lead directly into employment or further study as identified by the learners according to their interests.

Preparation For Employment

This 20 hour “Be WORK Ready” module is ideal for those needing to enter the workforce for the first time, re-enter the workforce due to unemployment, people who may be underemployed and/or those who may be looking at changing career paths. This module gives learners practical, hands-on experience around the six employability skills.

Guest speakers from industry or resume experts may be invited to speak to the students. Students will be given the opportunity to develop their own resumes and cover letters, and understand key selection criteria.

English Skills For Aged Care L1

Learn about the language of the aged care sector, individualised care plans, working with carers, and working with diverse people. It’s also designed to support learners to gain vocationally module focuses on literacy and
numeracy contextualised for the aged care sector.

Dandenong Community and Learning Centre (DCLC) offers a range of classes to meet training needs of the community.
 
Aged care class is an introductory class which covers:
  • Understanding individualised support.
  • Promoting independence and well-being.
  • Developing effective relationships with carers and families.
  • Working with diverse people.   
  • Supporting the empowerment of people with a disability.
  • Exploring home and community support services for older people.
  • Experience in working with learners preparing to access the workforce 
  • Knowledge of the Aged Care sector.

At the end of the module, learners should demonstrate measurable gain at PQF+ level 1.

LANGUAGE Level 1: Give a direct answer to familiar questions in a highly familiar context. Has a limited vocabulary of highly familiar words.

LITERACY (R) Level 1: Understand short, simple texts with clear, consistent formats that are written in simple sentences in a restricted range of contexts.

LITERACY (W) Level 1: Write short, simple sentences to convey an idea, information, or message.

NUMERACY Level 1: Locate and recognise simple, everyday mathematical information in highly familiar short and simple oral and/or written materials where the mathematics is highly explicit.

Participants will complete the course with:
 
  • An understanding of the skills required to work in aged care and disability services.
  • Knowledge on a career pathway in aged care and disability services.
  • A certificate of participation.
